23June2014* the outdoor gym at hidropark

On my last day in Kyiv, I ventured out to the hidropark island again with my friend Joe for a beautiful panoramic views of the city from across the Dnieper before meeting my professor to visit the archaeological museum.  However, on the way, I was able to finally witness the ridiculous intensity and testosterone that fills the Hidropark outdoor gym.  For my last post for Ukraine, I dedicate this final post to the free-of-charge, scrapped together (everything from old hot-water radiators to car parts) gym that inhabits this island.  I think that the absolute best way to describe this place would be to quote lonely planet in their description, because it was 100% exactly that:

LONELY PLANET REVIEW

“Kyiv’s quirkiest sight might just be Hydropark’s giant, makeshift gym. The machines here are cobbled together from used truck parts and salvaged scrap metal. It’s a testosterone-fuelled affair, although you’ll usually see one or two women amid the muscle. On weekends and summer evenings the gym is packed. Beware: the sight of hundreds of sweaty dudes in Speedos pumping primitive iron could be a little off-putting. To get here, cross the footbridge and bear right. Next to the outdoor gym is a gymnastics zone that sees surprisingly competent amateurs swinging from horizontal bars.”
